چکیده

The TCP congestion control protocol is mainly designed for bandwidth symmetric paths. As two-way asymmetric connections will probably become common case in the future with the widespread use of ADSL, satellites and other high-speed technologies, it is important to make sure that congestion will be properly handled in these environments. To this end, we propose in this paper a new Adaptive Class-based Queuing mechanism called ACQ for handling two-way TCP tra c over links that exhibit bandwidth asymmetry. ACQ runs at the entry of the slow link and relies on two separate classes, one for ACK packets and one for Data packets. ACQ proposes to adapt the weights of both classes according to the crossing tra c in order to maximize some utility function de ned by the user or the network operator. We show by simulations that our mechanism is able to reach a good utilization of the available resources, managing then to maximize the satisfaction of the user of such asymmetric connections.

Performance Analysis of TCP Networks Loaded by Web Traffic

In this paper a flow level analysis framework is presented for calculating the performance descriptors in TCP networks based on Mean-Value Analysis (MVA). The framework is capable of handling both persistent (ftp-like) and non-persistent (Weblike) TCP connections with arbitrary topology. We can calculate not only average performance descriptors but also detailed flow level traffic and performan...

Adaptive and Selective Packet Marking in Communication Networks

We propose a novel traceback approach that marks IP traffic by applying selective marking and reducing load mechanisms. Our technique is adaptive and is exploiting any specific properties that help characterizing an activity in communication traffic. It helps reducing problems such as processing overhead, bandwidth overload, detecting security attacks, and handling encrypted traffic. The select...

Simulation of Long-Range Dependent Traffic and a Simulator of TCP Arrival Traffic

The long-range dependence of Internet traffic has been experimentally observed. One issue in handling long-range dependent traffic is how to simulate random traffic data with long-range dependence. The authors discuss a correlation-based simulator with a white noise input for generating long-range dependent traffic data. With the real TCP traffic traces, a simulation model of TCP arrival traffi...

TCP Improvements for Heterogeneous Networks: The Daedalus Approach

In this paper, we present a summary of the research work done by the Daedalus group at the University of California at Berkeley to improve TCP performance in a variety of situations, including lossy wireless networks, asymmetric networks, and Web traffic workload. To improve the performance of TCP over cellular wireless networks, we have implemented a TCP-aware link layer protocol called the sn...
